Civic Engagement Action Plan
As a parent or caregiver, your plate is full — and getting involved can feel like one more thing. But your voice matters. Use this worksheet to reflect on what matters most to you, plan your next move, and show your kids what it looks like to care out loud.
Identify an issue you care deeply about
Start small. Choose a topic that affects your daily life or community — something that sparks emotion or curiosity.
- Concerned about rising rent? → Housing justice.
- Tired of potholes on your street? → Local infrastructure.
- Want cleaner air for your kids? → Environmental policy.
Learn the basics before you speak up
Do a little digging. Who makes decisions about this issue? What policies already exist? Who's already working on it?
- Read your city or state government website.
- Follow trusted organizations on Instagram or Twitter.
- Google "[your issue] + [your city] + advocacy" to find local efforts.
You don't have to go it alone
Find like-minded people. Joining forces makes advocacy more fun and more effective.
- Join a local nonprofit, coalition, or mutual aid group.
- Attend a town hall, community meeting, or public forum.
- Follow and engage with issue-based hashtags (#SchoolLunch4All, #TransitJustice, etc.).
Advocacy starts in everyday spaces
You don't need a megaphone to make noise. Start with conversations at home, work, or school.
- Share a quick fact or article in your group chat.
- Bring up the issue during a team meeting (with kindness).
- Make a TikTok or Instagram reel about what you learned.
Pick one small action that moves the needle
Choose something doable, visible, and impactful — and don't overthink it!
- Call or email your elected official.
- Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.
- Sign (or better yet, start) a petition.
- Show up to a meeting, rally, or hearing.
Advocacy is a marathon, not a sprint
Celebrate wins. Reflect on hard days. And don't forget to rest — this work takes heart.
- Set monthly goals (e.g., attend one meeting, make two calls).
- Buddy up with a friend to keep each other motivated.
- Take breaks when needed and come back strong.
Hey. You belong in this work.
Your voice matters. Your story matters.
This world needs people like you who care enough to act. Thank you.
